MY BODY MY RIGHT !

My body my right

She is like any transgender who has lived life filled with ridicule and suffered discrimination and a continuous fight for rights and self-respect. Revathi’s autobiography jostles us away from our comfort zone as it reveals disturbing aspects of life as a hijra, yearning for love and identity

Revathi is a social worker working with Sangama, a Bangalore-based NGO that works for sexual minorities suffering oppression. She is a transgender who has gone through the entire cycle of understanding who she is, facing ridicule from family and society, yet standing up to her sexuality and eventually undergoing a sex change operation. She has lived within the closely-knit Hijra community, learnt their customs and has witnessed and experienced a lifestyle that is fraught with exploitation and discrimination. Today, as she stands up to her rights as a human being and in the process fights for the rights of other Hijras, she comes across as an ideal role model, not just for other transgenders, but also to other marginalized sections of Indian society.

“I am also born, like you were, to a mother and father. I also have emotions like love and desire. I just want to be able to wear the clothes that I like and live life that I like,” says Revathi, whose candid autobiography, ‘The Truth About Me: A Hijra Lifestory’ published by Penguin was recently translated into Telugu and published by Hyderabad Book Trust. “People who read the book, will get to see our lives from close quarters and gain a better understanding of what we are,” she says.

She was in Hyderabad during the launch of her Telugu book. Clad in cotton Kurta Pyjama, she was tirelessly answering the scribes, sometimes humouring them and at other times questioning them with intensity that unfailing ruffles the dormant human in us. “Why is it that the responsibility to make things better always thrust on us. You can be the mother of a hijra or a friend. It is for everyone to take up the issue and strive to change things for better. There are still people who refuse to talk to us, give work to us, allow us at schools and colleges. Nothing much has changed. There is ofcourse, the other side, the positive aspect - people who are ready to listen to our story and media, which is allowing us to speak.”

Revathi has penned her story in the most honest and straightforward manner and the Telugu translation ‘Nijam Cheputuna – Oka Hijra Aatma Katha’ was published by HBT. “The book became very popular. People, after reading the book told me how much better they understand Hijras. The book has been made into a play that has already been staged over 85 times. And in 35 of the shows I play myself,” she shares.
Speaking about discrimination of Hijras, she says, “We are consideredmuch lower than criminals. Money is important for us to live. We get a house on rent, not in decent areas, but in slums. And we always have to pay higher rent than others. We even pay a huge advance that is usually not returned while vacating the house. We pay more money even to get a blouse ironed. And we need to pay money to the local rowdy and even provide free sex. Who will give us work? There are only two kinds of work that we can do – One group that goes around giving blessings and good wishes (badhaayi) and the group that earns from sex work. Both the groups are usually at logger heads. Police and rowdy elements are other problems. Any murder or theft in the area and immediately the police starts harassing us.”

She further adds, “There are good and bad people in Hijras too. But unlike general people who are judged individually; if one Hijra does a mistake, the entire community is held responsible.”
In the capacity of a social worker, Revathi cousels other transgenders, speaks to them about their work and about various medical and health issues. She also works for Female to Male transgenders. “It is even worse for them as the parents refuse to acknowledge that their daughter is actually their son. Further, due to physiological differences that remain despite the sex change operation, they are at a risk of attack and rape and hence continue to remain confined.”

There is so much to change in terms of attitude and general behavior towards transgenders. And Revathi does not agree that NGOs are the solution. Eventhough she works for an NGO; she is wary of them, in general. “Government officials are too lazy to work at field level to get proper information and execute welfare schemes. So they take the help of NGOs to submit reports. Running an NGO has become a business of sorts. And many of them take the easiest way by giving preference to 10 people that they know. The government should take up TB or HIV AIDS related awareness programmes or education related programmes independently under the supervision of an IAS officer or collector,” she suggests.

“Education is a major issue. If the children had not taunted me and my parents would have supported me, I would have been able to complete my education and had a career for myself; instead I quit going to school. Is there a law to protect our rights to be able to wear what we want to and live the way we want to?” she asks probably for the umpteenth time and does not expect to be answered; atleast not any time soon.”

Truth About The Third Gender

Truth about the third gender

You’ll first have to get past the horde of reporters. And even before you catch a glimpse of her, you hear her loud voice! And that’s what she believes in doing, making sure she is heard loud and clear so that she can fight for the transgender community. We’re talking about A. Revathi, the transgender whose book, The Truth about Me: A Hijra Life story, was released in Telugu, Nijam Chepthunna, Oka Hijra Atmakatha.

Much has been written about Revathi’s struggle as a woman trapped in a man’s body and how she came to terms with life. “I want it to be easier for people to tell their families. Families need to accept us as we are,” she says, adding, “The discrimination remains and it feels terrible because we aren’t treated like humans.”

Revathi, who was a sex-worker, points out that while everyone is fighting for the safety of women, their community is excluded from it. “If a man misbehaves with anyone from our community or even rapes one of us, we can’t go to the police. We’re left to look out for ourselves,” she says.
Even renting out a home is a challenge and jobs are almost impossible. “I have no money to give my community, neither do I have the means to buy them homes. But, I can give them the strength and I will stand by them while they fight for their rights,” she asserts.

Transcending gender barrier

Transcending  gender  barrier

“When I was a boy I was ridiculed for my feminine gait and mannerisms, now people who know me as a woman ask me why I have a manly voice and physique,” laughs Revathi, giving an insight to a life of contrasts and conflicts she has faced.

The author of the first ever book published on transgenders, The Truth about Me: A Hijra Life Story (Penguin Books India), Revathi is in Hyderabad to participate in a series of talks and seminars to mark the release of the Telugu translation of her book ( Nijam Cheptunna: Oka Hijra Aatma katha , Hyderabad Book Trust publication).

A tiring train journey notwithstanding, Revathi is full of energy and eager to articulate her thoughts on her book, sexual minorities in society and her vision for her community.

Switching to Tamil and Hindi with ease, Revathi recollects the motivation behind writing her autobiography: “During my initial days of work with Sangama, I was given the task of identifying news regarding sexual minorities in newspapers and periodicals and preserve those news clips. Over a period of time I had realised every bit of news on LGBT community was of the other countries; very less about Indians. So I decided to do my own research and interviewed around 50 members of the community and gathered information. I was also often asked to talk about myself at various forums and would be given very short time. My experiences were so vast I felt I was not doing justice in that five-minute slot. That’s when I thought I should come forward with my story as well. What better way than to write an autobiography?”

“Penguin India commissioned me to write and I took four years to complete it. I had decided I’ll not hide anything, but write every incident of my life, so that people with similar experiences and who are in similar situations will take a leaf out of my book to deal with their lives.”

Not surprisingly, some of the members from her community were critical of her revelations in the book. ‘Why did you have to mention you were raped? Why did you have to reveal you were a sex worker? You shouldn’t have embarrassed your family like that...”

But Revathi is happy she was honest with her book. She mentions of an incident where a girl, encouraged after reading her book went ahead with a sex-change operation and lives a happy life now.

There’s a natural flair and professional touch to Revathi’s writing. Did she ever pursue a dream of becoming a writer? “I wrote a love letter — in poetic form to a boy when I was in 8th standard — my first attempt at creative writing. More than the writing, I was stunned by my feeling towards another boy and realised it can’t be true and tore the paper,” laughs Revathi.

On a serious note, though, she says, through arts, one can reach out to peoples’ hearts and that’s what she intends to do. Fully determined towards working for the cause of the transgenders and creating awareness about their plight in society, Revathi has become the voice of the sexual minorities, especially in the south. “Accept us legally and respect the choice of our gender,” she says and adds, “Will you please consider employing a transgender in your organisation, however small the job might be?”

It was more a challenge than a plea.

The gullible and the gutsy

Born as Dorai Swamy in a remote village near Nammakkal in Salem district of Tamil Nadu, Revathi underwent a sex change operation during her teens and had aspired to live the life of a woman. But her hurdles began at home. When her family refused to accept her, Revathi had no choice but to flee and befriend Aravanis (Hijras in Tamil Nadu) and endure a life of uncertainties. After being subjected to physical abuse, rape and rejection, Revathi turned sex worker but she made continuous efforts to come out and live a life that’s different from hijras. Her travails continued through her travels to Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. Being part of hijra communities in all these cities, Revathi was exposed to society’s darker side. A short-lived marriage later, Revathi was determined to change the course of her life and that of many others of her community. She joined Sangama, an NGO in Bangalore, working towards upliftment of sexual minorities. From being an office assistant to being its director now, Revathi, through Sangama, hopes to see a society that has no age, region, religion and sex barriers.

Accept us legally and respect the choice of our gender

" WE ARE SEEN AS CRIMINALS "

In Pursuit of an Identity

HYDERABAD: At the first sight, she looks like any other woman her age. She has the warmth and a smile that makes anyone comfortable. She takes time to answer questions, only because of the language barrier. Addressing a room filled with students and well-wishers of the transgender community, Hijra Revathi says, “This book is my tool. It is an instrument to let more people understand that all we are asking for is acceptance.”

Hijra Revathi after the launch of her book at ICSSR hall Osmania University on Sunday| A RadhakrishnaIn the city to launch the Telugu version, ‘Nijam Cheptunna: Oka Hijra Atmakatha’, that was originally written in Tamil and later translated into four other languages, 47-year-old Revathi, describes the most gruesome and difficult times of her life as a hijra with utmost frankness in the book.

In broken Hindi, the only language that she speaks in, other than Tamil, she recalls, “When I was 17, I left home because I started to feel and behave like a woman. People in my home could not accept this. There was no respect for me and hence, I moved out, into a hijra community.”
Going through the same experiences as everyone else in the community, she too took to activities such as begging and sex work for a living,  spent days and nights on random footpaths, taken a beatings from the police and goons before finally reaching Bangalore.
“I joined the not-for-profit organisation Sangama as an assistant officer and later became the director of the organisation,” she informs, a rarity because hijras are still a subject of ridicule, where most people assume that it is unnatural.
But Revathi has not just worked in regular space. “The organisation works for the benefit of all minority groups and I have worked for rights of women, Muslims, Christians dalits and also adivasis,” she shares, adding that she has also worked with Medha Patkar for Narmada Bachao Andolan.
Revathi’s book that is currently available in five languages was published as ‘The Truth about Me’ by Penguin in 2010. The main reason for her to pen the book in the first place was to tell people that transgender community is the only minority group that is deprived of the basic right to live. “We are seen as criminals. There is no law in place for the atrocities that happen against us,” she expresses adding when it comes to family there are property issues. “There is no rightful ownership for children, as there is no law for someone, who is neither male nor female. That becomes a legal hassle,” she vents out.
The story and the hard reality has created so much buzz, that it is also been recommended as an academic reading at American College in Madurai. “This book has initiated a lot of dialogue after its release. The fact that we are releasing it in Osmania University itself shows that people have started accepting us. You are sitting with us and listening to our story. That is a sign,” she expresses.
She hopes that the book becomes part of syllabi in 320 universities across the country that could work towards sensitising people about the community.
The book was launched by the Hyderbad Book Trust in association with Anveshi Research Centre for Women’s studies. Sunitha, who was fundamental in launching the book for city readers, shares that the book is making the right impact. “No one understands that this is a natural phenomenon. The society is divided into two - male and female and it stops there. All that the transgender community is asking for is to let them live. This book is making it an impact and it is a proud moment for us,” she voices out.
