Bhimayana is a graphic biography
of Dr B.R. Ambedkar told in the Pardhan Gond art style by Durgabai Vyam and
Subash Vyam, with story by Srividya Natarajan and S. Anand.
This art—deploying
thick outlines enclosing dotted, shaded space—is particularly well-suited to
describe pain and wide-eyed incomprehension in the face of wanton cruelty.
Bhimayana tells the story of a man who did not have to go to South Africa to
experience discrimination, a man who has been relegated to being the ‘architect
of the constitution’ in history books. While narrating Ambedkar’s experiences
of untouchability, Bhimayana is also a robust exposé of caste in contemporary India. It is
published in eight languages so far.
Bhimayana
has been hailed by CNN.com as one of the Top 5 political graphic books ever
published.
The
Program involves Children’s interpretation of the book and Interaction with the
co-Author.
